Ireland had saunas before saunas were cool.
Long before the Nordic sauna caught on here, Ireland had its own: the teach allais, or sweat house (said “chock AL-ish”). These were small beehive-shaped huts of stacked stone, mostly found in the north-west.
A turf fire was lit inside to heat the stones, then raked out. People crawled in through the low doorway, sat on rushes and sweated it out, then cooled off in a nearby stream. Some were still in use into the 1800s, valued as a cure for aches and rheumatism.
Our logo is that sweat house: the stones, the doorway and the fire inside. The beehive shape is the same shape as a sauna hat, so the hat wears the story.
